Creating

Spaces

The Foundation

When the environment feels safe, the child can finally breathe — and everything else becomes possible.

We spend a great deal of energy trying to manage behaviour. But behaviour is a response to the environment. When we change the environment — thoughtfully, affordably, without specialist equipment — we change the child's experience of the world. That is what this course teaches.

The environment is never neutral

The same room that feels perfectly comfortable to you can feel completely overwhelming to your autistic child. Understanding why — and what to do about it — is the first step.

No money required

A chitenge on the floor. A blanket over two chairs. A piece of paper with pictures. The most powerful sensory tools are already in your home — you just need to know how to use them.

Built for every space

Homes, classrooms, churches, community halls. The principles are the same everywhere — and this course covers all of them, with specific guidance for each.

Understanding Sensory Experience

Eight senses — not five

Most of us were taught that humans have five senses. In fact we have eight — and the three less commonly known ones are particularly important for understanding how autistic children experience the world.

👁️ Sight
Lights, colours, visual clutter and movement
👂 Sound
Background noise, unpredictable sounds, echo
👃 Smell
Cleaning products, food, perfume, candles
👅 Taste & Texture
Food textures, temperatures, flavours
🤚 Touch
Clothing, surfaces, unexpected contact
🤸 Proprioception
Body position in space — seeking heavy input
🌀 Vestibular
Balance and movement — rocking, spinning, swinging
💓 Interoception
Internal body signals — hunger, pain, temperature

A child who covers their ears is not being dramatic. A child who rocks is not misbehaving. A child who refuses to wear certain clothes is not being difficult. Their senses are telling them something important.

Is This For You?

This course was made for you if…

🏠

You want to make your home easier for your child

You have noticed that certain rooms, certain times of day, or certain situations consistently trigger distress. You want to understand why — and what to change.

👩‍🏫

You teach or work with autistic children

Whether your classroom is well-equipped or working with very little, you want to create an environment where autistic children can actually learn — not just survive the day.

You lead or serve in a community space

A pastor, elder, teacher or community worker who wants to make your space genuinely welcoming for autistic children and their families — practically and affordably.

🌍

You want real solutions for your real context

Not advice written for a different country. This course was built for Zimbabwean and African homes, schools and community spaces — with the resources that are actually available.

Knowledge that comes from living it — not reading about it.

This course was built from years of making homes, classrooms and community spaces work for autistic children — with the things that were actually available. Not specialist equipment. Not expensive tools. Intention. Knowledge. Consistency.

Everything in this course has been tested in real life — in real homes across Zimbabwe and the UK, in real community settings, with real children whose nervous systems needed something different from what the environment was giving them.

You have more power to change your child's environment than you realise. This course shows you how to use it.

"It does not take money to change an environment. It takes seeing it through your child's eyes. That is what this course teaches you to do." — Creating Sensory-Friendly Spaces
